about
After remixing for the likes of Lana Del Rey, Outkast and The Kooks, French feel-good funk maestro Jean Tonique has continued a prolific streak with two critically-acclaimed full-length albums, multiple EPs and a string of wonderfully unique yet accessible hit singles. Inspired by hip-hop, house and 70s/80s funk, the last few years have seen him develop into one of the most exciting producers in French electronic music whilst earning him multiple appearances on Hype Machine’s Top 10.
Jean took to Los Angeles in 2019 for a writing break and consequently released the single ‘Too Bad’ in September that year. It marked a distinct evolution in style, drawing influences from the likes of Tame Impala and Mac Demarco, with a dreamy, psychedelic indie-pop creation.
Come 2020, and the track has now caught the attention of Dutch production trio, Kraak & Smaak. The nu-disco legends flip the lazy stoner atmosphere of the original into a relaxed yet dancefloor-ready future classic. Jean’s catchy vocals float effortlessly over slick bass lines, cut-ting-edge sound design and grooving drums, a sonic landscape that has fast become the signa-ture of Kraak & Smaak’s Pleasure Centre era.
This single is a perfect amalgamation of two signature sounds that come together to provide yet another innovative and radio-ready cut. Perfect for summer and your bedroom dancefloor.
